Ningbo University, founded in 1986, is an emerging local comprehensive university that has grown up during the reform and opening up. In April 2011, the School of Marxism was established on the basis of the former Teaching Department of Ideological and Political Theory Course and the Political Department of Law School. Nowadays, it has developed into a teaching unit of ideological and political theory courses and a research institution of Marxist theory, and has become the supporting unit of the Marxist theoretical subject. In 2016, the Propaganda Department of Ningbo Municipal Party Committee and Ningbo University jointly established the School of Marxism; in 2017, the School was awarded the first batch of "key construction universities and colleges of Marxism" in Zhejiang Province.
The discipline construction of Marxist theory has experienced an extremely obvious progress. In 1999, the discipline of Marxism and Ideological and Political Education was approved as a key support discipline of the city, and developed into a key construction discipline in 2002; In 2007, the discipline of Ideological and Political Education was approved as a key Class A discipline of the city; the discipline of Marxism Theory was listed as the key construction discipline of the school; In 2013, the discipline of Marxism and Contemporary Chinese Social Practice was approved as a key discipline in Ningbo; in 2018, the discipline of Marxism theory was approved as a key Class A discipline in the city. In 2017, it was listed as a 4-star high-level discipline in China, and tied for 40th place (ranked by the iResearch China Alumni Association Network); In 2018, it occupied the top 18% among the schools with a master's degree in China (Qiu Junping ranking). In addition, it ranks 61th among the best disciplines of Shanghai Ranking, ranking in the top 25%, and has been ranked first among universities in Zhejiang Province for two consecutive years. In 2019, the subject is ranked 43, ranking in the top 12.5%, with a four-star ranking, and ranking first in Zhejiang Province for 3 consecutive years (Qiu Junping ranking).In 2020, it was listed as a 5-star first-class discipline in China, ranking among the top 20.9% in China.In 2021, the best disciplines of soft science in China will rank in the top 20%; In 2022 and 2023, the best disciplines of soft science in China will rank in the top 10%, and the major of ideological and political education major was approved as the national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and entered the top 20 in the "2023 Soft Science China University Professional Ranking".
The foundation of the degree program is solid. In 2003, it was approved for a master's degree in Marxist theory and ideological and political education; In 2005, two second-level master's programs in the basic principles of Marxism and ideological and political education were established; In 2006, the second-level master's program of Sinicization of Marxism was added; In 2011, the first-level master's degree granting point of Marxist theory was approved. At present, the college has four stable research directions including the basic principles of Marxism, the Sinicization of Marxism, foreign Marxism, and ideological and political education.
